Beyond Obstacles is a private psychological practice that specialises in psychometric assessment services in the Sutherland Shire area and beyond.
Beyond Obstacles also provides information sessions for teachers and parents about the nature of psychometric assessments for students, and how these assessments can help students to reach their potential and overcome the obstacles preventing them from learning and achieving their potential.

Aline Laycock, founder of Beyond Obstacles, is a psychologist registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS). As a mother of two school-aged children, Aline has a personal understanding of the challenges and concerns parents experience and the need to help children enjoy learning.

WHAT IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT?
Whilst we can provide assessments for all ages, most assessments are conducted with school aged children (5 to 18 years old) to examine reasons for academic, social, behavioural, or emotional difficulties. These assessments can have different names, including psychological assessment, educational assessment and psychometric assessment.

How are these tests different from school-based tests
or school reports?
A school-based test gives a measure of a student’s proficiency on a particular subject area, such as reading and mathematics. An example of this is a school-based test or a NAPLAN test.
However, assessments conducted at Beyond Obstacles take a holistic approach that considers other factors that may contribute to a student’s academic ability or difficulties, such as anxiety, developmental history, family history, attention, motivation, and attitude.
It is also important to note that feedback and observations from teachers and parents are a crucial part of the assessment.
OUR PROCESS
At Beyond Obstacles, we believe that communication with students, parents and teachers is instrumental in the process. We will take the time to build rapport and clearly explain the assessment process and outcomes to create a positive experience for all involved.
Beyond Obstacles uses the best psychometric tests available and provides parents with a practical report highlighting the way forward using strategies known to help students. It may also be helpful for us to work with your child’s school or other allied health professionals to achieve the best outcome possible for your child.
