WHAT TESTS ARE USED?

IQ tests

IQ Tests
An IQ test is a standardised test of a student’s cognitive ability. We use the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V), which measures several areas of intelligence that are closely related to academic performance, including verbal comprehension, problem solving, working memory and processing speed.

Academic Tests

An academic test assesses a student’s academic ability in language, reading, spelling, writing and mathematics. We use the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III) which is a standardised academic test of the above areas.  Together, the WISC-V and the WIAT-III give a ‘snapshot look’ at a student’s cognitive ability and academic performance.

Other Tests

At Beyond Obstacles, we also use other tests and screening tools to gain further insight into a student’s behaviour, to explore concerns around inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, development, and socialisation. These screening tools might be completed by parents, teachers, or the student, and so gaining information from multiple sources to create a holistic picture of the student’s functioning.

The tests used to assess a student are tailored to their needs and presenting difficulties. These tests are:

How are these tests different from school-based tests

or school reports?

A school-based test gives a measure of a student’s proficiency on a particular subject area, such as reading and mathematics. An example of this is a school-based test or a NAPLAN test.

However, assessments conducted at Beyond Obstacles take a holistic approach that considers other factors that may contribute to a student’s academic ability or difficulties, such as anxiety, developmental history, family history, attention, motivation, and attitude.

It is also important to note that feedback and observations from teachers and parents are a crucial part of the assessment.
